Founded in 1865 in Worcester, Mass., WPI is one of the nation's first engineering and technology universities. Rowing Varsity Eight Honored as NEWMAC Boat of the Week (Apr. 8)
The third-ranked team in the CRCA Top 15, defeated No. 6 Smith, No. 5 Wesleyan and Colby, who is receiving votes, to reclaim the Jennifer McLaughlin '06 Cup for the first time since 2011 on Saturday. The Engineers also bested No. 12 Hamilton each day and added a pair of wins over No. 13 Washington College on Sunday.

Women's 4x100m Garners NEWMAC Track & Field Relay of the Week Honors (Apr. 8)
The team of freshman Katherine Pawlak, senior Michelle Gencorelli, sophomore Katy Nippert and freshman Janelle Knight handed in the 23rd-ranked, and NEWMAC-best, 4x100-meter relay time of 48.81 at the UMass Minuteman Invitational.

Caraline Wood of Averill Park, N.Y., Named NEWMAC Softball Athlete of the Week (Apr. 8)
Wood batted .519 (14-27) with a walk off and four extra base hits to go with 13 RBI and nine runs scored as the Engineers went 7-1. The game-ending hit extended the Engineers winning streak to nine after the first game versus Babson on Saturday. In addition to recording multiple hits in six of the eight games, the senior also collected five RBI in the nightcap at Springfield on Tuesday. The Crimson and Gray also faced local foes Worcester State and Clark during the busy week.

Rowing Varsity Eight Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athletes of the Week
The very rare back-to-back honoree completed a memorable weekend Sunday by defeating top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Bates in thrilling fashion on Lake Quinsigamond. The race came down to the final 10 strokes with WPI claiming the victory by just 0.34 seconds over Bates (6:37.40 to 6:37.74). The Engineers, second in the latest USRowing/CRCA Division III Top 15, also knocked off No. 3 Williams to take home the Donahue Cup on Saturday.

David Larson of Port Tobacco, Md., Honored as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week
The junior hit .467 (7-for-15) with three doubles and a home run to go with four BI and three runs scored. He also boasted a .867 slugging and .556 on-base percentages. Two doubles were part of a 3-for-4 series opener at Coast Guard before the third was in a 2-for-4 game that also saw the junior allow only three hits and strike out six in an eight-inning victory. He concluded the week with what proved to be the game-winning swing in the form of a home run in the finale. The two-run shot also sparked a five run frame.

Rowing Varsity Four Named WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week (Apr. 7)
Mark Borghesani, Peter Beretich, Brendan McCann, Joe Crognale and coxswain Ella Forbes won twice this past weekend. After besting Wesleyan and WPI B with a 7:36.5 on Saturday, the group crossed the finish line ahead of WPI B, Hamilton and Conn. College on Sunday.

Day and Marsh Collect Third NWCA Academic Honor; Wrestling Boasts Top 30 Team GPA
As a team, the Engineers ranked 22nd with a 3.515 GPA for the program's fourth consecutive top 30 showing. In terms of the individual awards, Baldwin Wallace and Ithaca led the list of honorees with eight All-Academic selections apiece, while nine other institutions, including WPI, had 7 individuals making the list.

Field Hockey Earns 15th Consecutive NFHCA Academic Team Award
The Division III National Academic Squad program honors student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year while the Division III National Academic Team Award recognizes programs that earned a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2018-19 school year.

Phillips and Ambrosino Sweep NEWMAC Softball Weekly Awards
WPI junior Mackenzie Phillips and freshman Lindsay Ambrosino were recognized as the NEWMAC Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. It is the second time the Engineers have swept the awards this season as the duo joins Caraline Wood and Katie Martin who were lauded on March 11.

Vadnais Heights' Keely Nistler Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week
Nistler won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Bryant Black and Gold Invitational with a PR and NEWMAC season-best time of 11:42.14. In addition to the 22nd-ranked time in Division III so far this season, the event featured two representatives from Holy Cross and one each from Siena and Bryant.

Hollis' Ben Steeves Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week
Steeves set a school record as the WPI men's track & field team kicked off the outdoor season with a sixth-place finish Saturday at the Bryant Black and Gold Invitational. The sophomore finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.94, which is No. 17 on the NCAA Division III performance list.

The junior struck out five in a two hit shutout in the nightcap versus Emerson on Sunday. It is Phillips third win in as many outings and first since March 9 versus St. John Fisher, who was receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 at the time.

Pembroke's Ryan Tropeano Tabbed as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week (Mar. 25)
The senior batted .467 with seven hits, including four doubles, 11 total bases and a .733 slugging percentage. Tropeano bookended his week with three hits in the wins versus Gordon and Plymouth State. He also stole a pair of bases.

Katie Martin of Bedford, N.H., Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week
Martin, went 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA while striking out 28 batters in 26 innings over six appearances, including four starts and a pair of complete games, during the Engineers stay at the Sunkissed Games. After striking out five in her season debut versus Bluffton, Martin set down a career-high 11 against Illinois College. The sophomore then sandwiched a six K performance opposite Muskingum with three in each game with Ohio Northern.

Jordan DeDonato of Danvers, Mass., Honored as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week
The sophomore hit a team-best .545 (6-for-11) to go with four walks and three RBI in a 2-2 week. He also posted a slugging percentage of .545 and a team-high on-base percentage of .667. DeDonato's week was highlighted by a 3-for-5 outing with two RBI versus Brandeis and a 2-for-4 game with an RBI and three runs scored in the middle game versus New England College.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Student Team Completes Project in Two National Parks
Glacier was one of the areas ravaged by devastating wildfires in 2018. After careful monitoring, the Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division (IGSD) team-which is responsible for all non-academic aspects of the Global Projects Program, from housing and confirming program dates to creating on-site handbooks and operating a 24-hour emergency line for all project centers-decided it would not be feasible to begin the project work in August due to safety issues and travel restrictions. The trip was then postponed four weeks.

North Haven's Dominic Fusco Elevated to D3baseball.com Team of the Week
Fusco, who was also selected as the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week, tossed four perfect innings and struck out 11 of the 12 batters he faced while earning the save in a trio of one-run games. He made his season debut with a save on Monday versus Waynesburg (PA) and then closed out both games of a doubleheader against Wentworth Wednesday. Fusco later finished the week on the mound for the Engineers where he struck out two of the final three batters of the trip.
