Worcester Polytechnic Institute Launches Class of 2015 with Commencement Address from Pioneering Astronaut

The largest graduating class in WPI's history, 1,680 students, received their degrees beneath a large, billowing tent that shielded graduates and well-wishers from the sun that occasionally peeked from behind generally cloudy skies. In all, the Institute awarded 956 bachelor's degrees, 682 master's degrees, and 42 PhDs during its 147th Commencement exercises.

Five From WPI Earn Worcester Area Baseball All-Star Accolades

WPI junior Alex Venditti was named the player of the year and head coach Mike Callahan was tabbed co-coach of the year while three others also earned a spot on the fifth annual Worcester Area Baseball All-Star Team. The selections were made by the area sports information directors and feature student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions, including Holy Cross and Assumption.

Katie Bumila of Raynham, Mass., Named CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team Honoree

Bumila has been selected as a Capital One Division III Academic All-American by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bumila was named to the first team, becoming just the 13th WPI student-athlete all-time to pick up first team accolades.

Women's 4x100-Meter Relay Qualifies For Saturday's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship Final

The 4x100 quartet of Alex Price, Liz Pellegrini, Maya Rhinehart and Sara Velleca placed fifth in their heat, and eighth overall, with a school-record time of 47.24.

WPI Softball's Nina Murphy-Cook of Roseville, Calif., Garners First NFCA All-America Honor in Program History

Freshman Nina Murphy-Cook became the first WPI softball student-athlete to garner National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America status as she was named to the Division III third team as a utility player. The 2015 selections were revealed at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship banquet Wednesday evening.

Venditti, Greene and Landry Earn All-New England Baseball Honors

Alex Venditti took home American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), D3baseball.com and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England First Team honors as three WPI student-athletes totaled seven regional selections. Sean Greene also earned ABCA and NEIBA All-New England First Team accolades to go along with D3baseball.com Second Team honors while Taylor Landry, the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year, picked up a D3baseball.com Third Team nod.

Nathan Hughes of Arlington, Va., Repeats as CoSIDA Academic All-District I Honoree

Hughes touts an impressive 3.97 GPA as a robotics engineering and computer science double major. A five-time Dean's List member, he was named a Charles O. Thompson scholar as top 10 percent of his freshman class at WPI. This past winter Hughes earned selection to his second straight NEWMAC Men's Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team. A member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, Hughes just completed his IQP Project in Zurich, Switzerland.

WPI Softball's Historic Season Concludes in NCAA Division III Championship Super Regionals

The WPI Softball team (34-11) set the program and school record for team wins in a single season en route to its first-ever NCAA Division III Championship tournament berth. The Engineers made the most of it by sweeping through the Williamstown Regional and sporting a 3-2 record on the national stage.

WPI (34-9) captured the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Williamstown Regional last weekend and will now face two-time defending national champion and undefeated Tufts in a Super Regional. The action in the best-of-three series begins Thursday in Medford.

For the second straight season WPI softball senior Katie Bumila has been tabbed Capital One Division III Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Bumila was honored first team in District I, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

Baseball Duo Repeats as Co-SIDA Academic All-District I Selections

WPI baseball student-athletes Sean Kelly and Taylor Landry have been selected to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District I team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The duo earned first team accolades for the second consecutive season in District I, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

Ama Biney and Nina Murphy-Cook were named to the 2015 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New England first team while Katie Bumila was selected to the second team. All three were previously named NEWMAC All-Conference for their efforts during the regular season.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Maggie LaRoche, Gina Capobianco, Emily Newman and Jessica Orr set the school record with a ninth-place time of 9:47.17 at the Division III New England Championships on Saturday.

For the first time in program history, the WPI softball team has been selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Championships. The Engineers, who finished runner-up in this past week's NEWMAC Tournament, earned one of the coveted 18 Pool C (at-large) bids available nationwide.

Rowing's Third Varsity Eight Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

The Salisbury Prize was instituted in 1871 by Stephen Salisbury, a 19th century businessman and philanthropist who was one of the founders of WPI. Salisbury, who also served as President of the Board of Trustees, established the award to recognize outstanding members of the senior class "who have faithfully, industriously, and with distinguished attainment" completed all course and project requirements for the bachelor's degree.
