Doherty, the 2014 NEWMAC goal scoring champion, picked up right where she left off with five goals as the Engineers opened the season 3-0. The senior forward reached the 50 point milestone by netting a goal in each half of WPI's 3-1 season-opening victory versus Salve Regina on Tuesday.

Blaine Bursey of Middleburg, Fla., Tabbed Liberty League Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Bursey nailed what proved to be the game-winning field goal in the "Battle of the Engineers" when he booted a 26-yarder with 9:58 to go. The junior also successfully connected on all four of his PATs.

Dan Eckler of Stoughton, Mass., Earns Liberty League Football Offensive Performer of the Week Honors

The junior signal caller was an efficient 18-for-23 on the night for 197 yards and rushed 13 times for 58 yards. His 15-yard scoring strike to Brandon Eccher with three seconds to go in the first half capped an impressive 8-play 72-yard drive.

Nina Murphy-Cook of Roseville, Calif., Collects 2015 NFCA Division III Golden Shoe Award

The NFCA Golden Shoe award is presented annually to the player determined to be the most outstanding base stealer from an NFCA member institution in each of the following divisions: NCAA (Divisions I, II and III), NAIA, NJCAA (Divisions I, II and III), Cal JC, NWAACC and high school. A committee comprised of elected head coaches in each of the 10 represented divisions selects the winner of their respective award.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards: competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship and finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org

WPI's women's rower Corre Steele been selected as a first team Capital One Division III Academic All-American by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It marks the third Academic All-America laurel in the At-Large division for Steele, which includes student-athletes from bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Launches Class of 2015 with Commencement Address from Pioneering Astronaut

The largest graduating class in WPI's history, 1,680 students, received their degrees beneath a large, billowing tent that shielded graduates and well-wishers from the sun that occasionally peeked from behind generally cloudy skies. In all, the Institute awarded 956 bachelor's degrees, 682 master's degrees, and 42 PhDs during its 147th Commencement exercises.

Five From WPI Earn Worcester Area Baseball All-Star Accolades

WPI junior Alex Venditti was named the player of the year and head coach Mike Callahan was tabbed co-coach of the year while three others also earned a spot on the fifth annual Worcester Area Baseball All-Star Team. The selections were made by the area sports information directors and feature student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions, including Holy Cross and Assumption.

Nathan Hughes of Arlington, Va., Repeats as CoSIDA Academic All-District I Honoree

Hughes touts an impressive 3.97 GPA as a robotics engineering and computer science double major. A five-time Dean's List member, he was named a Charles O. Thompson scholar as top 10 percent of his freshman class at WPI. This past winter Hughes earned selection to his second straight NEWMAC Men's Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team. A member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, Hughes just completed his IQP Project in Zurich, Switzerland.
