WPI senior Dereck Pacheco and junior Spencer Herrington each claimed one of the first-ever NEWMAC Football Athlete of the Week honors which were handed out on September 5th. Pacheco was tabbed as the defensive athlete of the week while Herrington claimed special teams athlete of the week accolades. Springfield senior Jake Eglintine (Ballston Spa, NY) took home offensive athlete of the week laurels.

The WPI men's and women's track & field teams were honored for their work inside the classroom for the 10th consecutive season while 10 student-athletes were recognized for their academic and athletic achievements by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) during the 2016-17 indoor and/or outdoor campaigns.

WPI senior Tim Petri and sophomore Jack Bauer were named Academic All-America at-large selections, as voted upon by select members of the College Sports Information Directors Association of America. Petri earned second team honors while Bauer landed on the third.

WPI senior Hope Shevchuk has been tabbed as an Academic All-America at-large second team selection, as voted upon by select members of the College Sports Information Directors Association of America. The 2016 at-large third teamer was also recently named to the softball first team.

WPI seniors Audrey Allen and Jennifer Golden earned their third Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete nod while a total of 11 student-athletes were also recognized with the academic honor. All honorees were previously named to the NEWMAC and NIRC All-Academic teams.

WPI skipper Mike Callahan was named Coach of the Year and seven student-athletes were honored as part of the seventh annual Worcester Area Baseball All-Star Team, as recently announced in the Telegram & Gazette. Sophomore Steven Gallagher, senior Nick Comei and sophomore Ryan Tropeano were voted to the first team while junior Matt Howard, graduate student Anthony Capuano, sophomore Doug Rives and senior Mike Duclos collected second team honors.

Packard's seventh-place time 2:11.05 was also the top New England performance. It is the second consecutive outdoor meet the Engineers have boasted an All-America and it is the program's 10th overall for head coach Brian Chabot. Ohio Northern's Emily Richards repeated as national champion.

Freshman Sydney Packard finished second in her 800-meter run heat with another school record run to earn a spot in Saturday's title race at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships, hosted by Mount Union at the SPIRE Institute. Junior Lea Strangio, meanwhile, will go in the books as the 17th-place runner with a time of 2:13.37 in the same event.

Junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA), freshman Alex Rus (Newton, MA), sophomore Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) and junior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) ended up sixth in their heat with a time of 3:15.6, edging Colby by just .24 seconds thanks to a late push by Staver. The time was quicker than the NEICAAA performance (3:16.88) which included alternate junior Paul-Henry-Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) while it was above the qualifying time set by the participating four at Oneonta (3:14.60)

The keynote address was given by Deborah Wince-Smith, president and CEO of the U.S. Council on Competitiveness.

This year's undergraduate address was given by Rodney Brooks, chairman and chief technology officer of Rethink Robotics.

Seniors Brian D'Amore, Kim Kocienski, and Austin Scott, and junior Lea Strangio were all selected as Academic All District I Cross Country/Track & Field team members as voted upon by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Steven Gallagher was honored by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA), American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com while four others were also recognized by both of the associations. Fellow sophomore Ryan Tropeano was a first team selection while junior Matt Howard was a second team pick. Joining Gallagher, who was a third teamer on all three lists, were seniors Nick Comei and Mike Duclos.

Seniors Lindsay Gurska and Hope Shevchuk have the distinction of being named Academic All-America first team members, as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is the first time in school history there have been two first teamers from the same team in the same year.
