WPI Men's Soccer Earns First NEWMAC Championship

With penalty kicks even at 1-1 heading into the fourth round, WPI seniors Pavolas Christidis and Ryan Stokes provided go-ahead and game-winning kicks while Tournament Most Outstanding Player Connor Hoeckele did the work between the pipes to secure the 2017 NEWMAC Men's Soccer Championship following a scoreless draw with Springfield Sunday at Brock-Affleck Field. The NEWMAC Co-Regular Season Champions also played to a scoreless tie back on October 21.

Sophomore Avery Ingegneri and senior Tristam Winship each earned All-NEWMAChonors as the duo led the WPI men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the NEWMAC Championships Sunday at Franklin Park.

Sophomore Sean McAllen was named the NEWMACFootball Offensive Athlete of the Week while classmate Nick Ostrowski was tabbed as the NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week and junior Spencer Herrington picked up his third NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week honor, including second in as many weeks.

Women's Cross Country Top 7 Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Sophomores Sydney Packard and Ariana Rozen, and seniors Emily Newman and Lea Strangio, each earned All-NEWMAC accolades and teamed with freshman Keely Nistler, sophomore Callie Schadt and junior Carly Neeld to set the program records for team finish (second), lowest point total (62) and number of All-Conference honorees at Sunday's NEWMAC Championships.

Ostrowski totaled a career-high 11 tackles, forced a fumble and returned an interception on the final play of the first half 55 yards for a touchdown as WPI went on the road and defeated MIT 24-21.

Herrington, who collected the weekly award for the second time this season, accounted for just over a quarter of WPI's scoring in a 41-7 home triumph vs Merchant Marine Saturday.

The configuration of Kinsey McNamara, Sarah Wutka, Christine Hovermale, Melissa Bazakas-Chamberlain, Marlies de Jong, Abby Sawyer, Eva Barinelli, Josephine Bowen, and coxswain Madeline Burke rowed to a first place finish (14:38.404), which was over thirty seconds ahead of Division I Holy Cross (15:11.081), Saturday at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta.

WPI senior Blake Rice and junior Brian Mahan garnered NEWMAC Football weekly honors. Rice was tabbed as the NEWMAC Co-Offensive Athlete of the Week along with Merchant Marine senior Brice Moore (Pace, Fla.) while Mahan was named as the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Karen (Noble) Mushrall of Mariaville, Maine, Secures NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week Accolades

Mushrall yielded only one goal in a two-win week for WPI. In a 6-0 shared shutout at Clark, the junior stopped five shots and went on to go the distance in a double OT triumph at Wheaton. Of her 12 saves versus the Lyons, Mushrall came up huge with an amazing diving stick save late in regulation.

Amanda Wetmore of Hudson, N.H., Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Wetmore, bolstered by a .800 performance at Babson, hit .548 in conference play and .301 overall in a 1-2 week. Nationally, the freshman became the Division III leader with a .548 percentage after Tuesday's match. It is also the second-best in all three divisions.
