NEWMAC Recognizes 31 WPI Winter Student-Athletes for Work in the Classroom

Eleven WPI winter student-athletes garnered NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status for the third time as 20 more were also recognized for carrying a 3.5 GPA or better. Men's Swimming & Diving totaled 13 selections, followed by Women's Swimming & Diving with 12. Women's Basketball featured four selections and Men's Basketball netted a pair.

Stephanie Marcucci of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., Secures NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week Accolades

Marcucci was one of WPI's three double winners Saturday at the Cougar Invitational. The junior achieved season-bests, and top NEWMAC times for the week, in the 100 (1:12.10) and 200 (2:37.62) breaststrokes.

Madison Beck of Syracuse, N.Y., Claims NEWMAC Women's Basketball Defensive Athlete of the Week Honors

Beck averaged eight points and 5.5 rebounds, but more importantly recorded five blocks and four steals, in a 2-0 week for the Engineers. One of the steals preceded a pair of successful free throws to seal a key 52-43 triumph at Babson. The senior finished with 10 points against the Beavers before notching nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals at Clark.

Antoine Harris of Southington, Conn., Tabbed as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Harris, the top Division III finisher in the 200 Saturday at BU, set a new WPI record with a time of 21.86 which is currently No. 13 on the NCAA performance list. The mark was .67 seconds faster than the runner up in the heat and .34 quicker than the previous WPI standard.

Swimming & Diving A Relays Honored as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week (Feb. 4)

Erick Burgwardt, Jack Bauer and Jackson Perry were members of all four winning relays at the Tech Sprints. They were joined by Dave Chen in in the 100 and 200 medley relays and Karim Elsayed in the 100 and 200 free relays.

Austin Shrewsbury of Westfield, Mass., Named WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week (Jan. 29)

Shrewsbury was the lone Engineer to win all three of his bouts on Saturday, including one over a nationally-ranked opponent, as WPI hosted No. 4 Johnson & Wales, No. 16 Brockport and Southern Maine. Ranked third in New England at 285, Shrewsbury worked overtime as he and his ninth-ranked opponent from Johnson & Wales went the full 11 minutes before the heavyweight emerged with a 4-3 victory. He began with a 3-1 win in SV1 versus Southern Maine and closed out the day with a 3-2 decision versus Brockport.

Lea Strangio of Watertown, Mass., Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Strangio, who entered the competition at BU 45th in DIII, was 10th immediately following the 800-meter run, and 11th as of Sunday night, with a time of 2:15.30. With three weeks to go, Strangio also has a chance to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in the distance medley relay.

Madison Beck of Syracuse, N.Y., Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week (Feb. 5)

Beck led all scorers with 18 points, on 7-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent), and added a key steal in the waning seconds as WPI collected a hard-earned 61-54 victory Saturday over visiting MIT. As a team, the Engineers secured season splits with three of the four other NEWMAC teams that are above .500 in league play and represent the top five in the standings. WPI has a chance to earn season split with league-leading Babson on Wednesday.

Sydney Seo of North Andover, Mass., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week (Jan. 29)

Seo swept the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:02.41 and 2:17.09 after helping the 200-yard medley relay to victory (1:55.81) during Saturday's dual at Hartwick. Earlier in the week, the sophomore once again led the 200 medley relay (1:55.43) to a triumph while, in her first time competing in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles, finished third in the 200 (2:10.82) and fourth in the 500 (5:56.94) at Clark. Wednesday's relay also featured senior Allysa Grant, senior Jenny Day and freshman Audrey Berner.

Jendritz and Marion Help Wrestling Sweep New England Wrestling Association Weekly Honors

WPI Wrestling swept the weekly New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) awards announced by the conference on Thursday morning. Senior 133-pounder Stephen Jendritz was tabbed the NEWA Wrestler of the Week while freshman 165-pounder Brendan Marion was named the organization's Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 21st.

Fabian Gaziano of Wilbraham, Mass., Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Gaziano broke the 60-meter hurdle record with a time of 8.30 in the trials at the Lyons Invitational Saturday afternoon. It is the third time the mark has been improved, and second time it has changed ownership, in just two weeks. Pending other results, the sophomore is ranked 12th on the Division III performance list.

Sydney Packard of Georgetown, Mass., Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

A week after posting what proved to be the second-ranked mile at the time, Packard posted a winning-time of 2:12.13 - 2:10.63 on a banked track - which is currently the atop the Division III performance list by nearly four seconds and is second in New England across all three divisions.

Arden Tanner of Ventura, Calif., Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week (Jan. 14)

Tanner debuted with the best time in the 60-meter dash trials with an 8.02 and was the runner up in the final with a time of 8.05. She was also a member of the winning 4x200-meter relay which handed in a time of 1:49.23. Both the trial and relay times are fifth on the Division III New England performance list.

Chris Rodgers of Franklin, Mass., Tabbed as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week (Jan 14)

Rodgers paced the Engineers with an average of 18.5 points and eight rebounds, as well as 11 assists and four steals in a 2-0 week. He also clicked for 83.3 percent (10-of-12) free throw shooting at Wheaton. The senior also posted 19 points and seven rebounds versus the Lyons. He then logged game-highs of 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists at Coast Guard.

Ama Biney of Worcester, Mass., Boasts NEWMAC, NEWBA and D3hoops.com Team of the Week Laurels (Jan. 14)

Biney averaged 21 points, nine rebounds 4.7 assists and 4.3 steals per game while notching two double-doubles in a 2-1 week (the loss being in OT on the road at MIT, in which she played 42 minutes). The offensive nominee boasted 20 points, six boards and five assists versus Clark and narrowly missed her career-high with 27 points, 10 rebounds and four assists against Coast Guard. In Saturday's OT setback at MIT, Biney netted 16 points, 11 boards and five assists. The local product totaled 14 assists and 13 steals while limiting her turnovers to four in three games. Biney shot 55% from the field and led the team in nearly every statistical category in all three games.

Biney averaged 15 points and 6.5 rebounds with seven steals and four assists as the Engineers began their NEWMAC slate 2-0. The senior narrowly missed a double-double Wednesday with 12 points and nine rebounds versus Springfield before leading the way with 18 points and five steals, as well as four assists at Wheaton on Saturday afternoon.

Alyssa Paul of Schaghticoke, N.Y., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Alyssa Paul of the basketball team has been tabbed as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 7th. Paul was perfect in just 12 minutes in Saturday's win at Wheaton. The junior was 4-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-2 from downtown, and 2-for-2 at the charity stripe to average a point per minute. Paul is shooting 46.7 percent in a career-best eight games in 2017-18.

Brendan Marion of Norristown, Pa., Named WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Brendan Marion from the wrestling team has been named as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 7th. A triple winner at 165 on Saturday, Marion began the day with an 11-3 major decision versus Roger Williams. He then earned a 9-4 decision over his opponent from Trinity before closing out with a pin in just 2:48 against his Wesleyan foe. The rookie is 15-3 overall, and 7-2 in dual meet competition, with seven pins.

Jake Needleman of Morganville, N.J., Named WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week (Dec. 31)

Jake Needleman from the basketball team has been named as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 31st. Needleman averaged 13.5 points on 9-of-14 shooting (64.3%) to go with five rebounds, four assists and a steal en route to E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic All-Tournament team honors. He began with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting (83.3%), including 80% (4-of-5) from beyond the arc, against host Wooster. He then scored 12 points and filled the stat sheet with two rebounds, three assists and a steal in the Engineers win versus Alma (MI).

Stasha Greenalch of Newington, Conn., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week (Dec. 31)

Stasha Greenalch of the basketball team has been tabbed as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 31st. Greenalch averaged 9.5 points 4.3 rebounds, 8.75 assists and 3.25 steals in the four games since finals, Just in the past two games, the senior doled out 22 helpers including a double-double versus New Paltz (11 points, 10 assists) and a career-best dozen against Ramapo on New Year's Eve. Greenalch posted a season-best 15 points to go with six assists and six steals versus Wells in the Daytona Beach Shootout opener.

Ama Biney of Worcester, Mass., Collects Women's Basketball Weekly Honors for Week Ending December 31

WPI senior Ama Biney has been honored by NEWMAC, NEWBA and WACBA, as recently announced by the organizations. Biney was tabbed as the NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the NEWBA Honor Roll. She was then selected as the WACBA Women's Co-Player of the Week.

WPI football seniors Lou Garcia and Dereck Pacheco made the trip to Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina December 16 for the 2017 DIII Senior Classic. Sean Murphy '16 represented the Engineers at the event two years ago.

Women's Soccer Trio Garners NEWISA All-New England Accolades

WORCESTER - Seniors Sophie Gomarlo and Karina Larson, and sophomore Kristen McCrea earned New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England status. Gomarlo and McCrea were named to the second team while Larson highlighted the third team.

Azita Bakhtyari of Andover, Mass., Becomes WPI's First Volleyball Academic All-America in 28 Years

The second team honoree is the first volleyball student-athlete to be recognized since Stacey Cotton (first team) in 1989. It is the fourth time a WPI volleyball player has been chosen as Cotton (third team), and Kathleen Murray (second team), were lauded in 1988.

Men's Swimming & Diving Sweeps NEWMAC Weekly Accolades

Westwood, MA --- Six members of the WPI men's swimming & diving team have garnered weekly awards from the NEWMAC. Sophomore Dave Chen was tabbed as the swimmer of the week while senior Randy Melanson was named the diver of the week. The 400-yard freestyle foursome of junior Jack Bauer, freshman Tim McDonald, junior Jackson Perry and senior Karim Elsayed was feted as the relay team of the week.

Audrey Berner of San Jose, Calif., Selected as NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week

Berner claimed the 100-yard freestyle for the Engineers, who defeated Wesleyan and fell to No. 3 Williams and Tufts, with a time of 53.86. Prior to that the rookie was third in the 200 (1:58.64) and fourth in the 50-yard butterfly (26.78).

Michael Curtis of Wells, Maine, Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Curtis racked up a dozen points during three matches Saturday at the Northeast Duals. He began with a pin against versus Eugene Latson from Niagara Community College and followed up with a 3-0 decision over Lantze Lange of Oneonta State. The junior then added to the Boynton Hillers lead with an 11-7 decision against Chance O`Mahony in the team's win over No. 16 Cortland State.
