Four Track & Field Records Fall During Busy Weekend at All-New Englands and BU Last Chance Meet

The men's 4x400-meter relay and women's distance medley relay team each set a new record as the track and field programs were busy this past weekend with the All-New England All-Divisions Championships and the BU Last Chance Meet. Individually. Freshman Sydney Packard and senior Austin Scott set school records in the 800 and mile, respectively.

Swimming & Diving Leads The Way as 28 From WPI Named Winter Academic All-NEWMAC

Led by men's swimming and diving seniors Ricky Coffin and Tim Petri, and women's swimming and diving seniors Emily Martin and Abbey Nack, 28 WPI winter student-athletes were designated Academic All-NEWMAC for their work in the classroom. The swimming & diving foursome each collected their third certificate while 14 others were repeat honorees and 10 were cited in their first year of eligibility.

WPI Men's Cross Country Team Cited by USTFCCCA; Scott Earns Fourth Solo Nod

Paced by four-time honoree senior Austin Scott a total of five WPI student-athletes were tabbed U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic in the sport of cross country. The men's and women's programs were also recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic teams for the seventh-consecutive year.

Ian Converse of Woodstock, Conn., Named NEWMAC Men's Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Converse narrowly missed averaging a double-double in the Engineers 2-0 week as he posted 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds to go with four assists, three blocks and three steals. He began with 24 points and eight rebounds at Wheaton before scoring 23 and grabbing 11 rebounds in the season finale versus Clark. He shot 50 percent from the field in both games.

Faye Gauthier of West Warwick, R.I., Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Gauthier was the lone WPI female to earn a victory this past weekend at the competitive Middlebury Invitational. The rookie launched the 20-pound projectile 49-5 to claim the weight throw. Her distance of 51-1.50 from the Wheaton Invitational is No. 30 on the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field performance list.

Randy Melanson of Attleboro, Mass., Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Melanson totaled the best diving scores of the night with a 257.25 on the 1-meter and 254.50 on the 3-meter in a midweek meet with Clark. He then swept the diving events at the Tech Sprints on Sunday with school-record breaking scores of 424.15 and 417.55, respectively. In all, Melanson now owns three of the four diving records.

Chris Rodgers of Franklin, Mass., Snags NEWMAC Men's Basketball Men's Co-Offensive Player of the Week Nod

Rodgers had a career week for the Engineers. He began with a career-best 21 points and a team-best seven rebounds to go with two assists, a steal and a block Wednesday at Clark. On Saturday, Rodgers added 16 more points, five assists, four rebounds, a steal and a block vs Wheaton. In all, the junior averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds to go with seven helpers, two blocks and two assists.

Ama Biney of Worcester, Mass., Biney Bags Third NEWMAC Women's Basketball Defensive Weekly Honor

Biney once again paced the Engineers in a 2-0 week, this time by narrowly averaging a double-double of 11.5 points and eight rebounds. She had a week-high of 13 points versus Springfield and posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards at Emerson. Biney also doled out four assists each game and, bolstered by seven steals against the Lions, averaged 4.5 for the week.

Emily Martin of Penfield, N.Y., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Martin won three individual events and helped three winning relays in a 3-0 week for WPI. On Wednesday Martin had individual success in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles with times of 55.70 and 1:59.93, and anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.89) in the Engineers sweep of Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth. In a team triumph at Hartwick, Martin claimed the 50-yard freestyle (25.72) and contributed to the success of the 400-yard freestyle (3:46.93) and 200-yard medley (1:54.03) relays.
