Brian Murtagh of Wayland, Mass., Completes Awards Circuit with D3football All-America Honorable Mention Nod

WPI senior Brian Murtagh has been named a D3football.com All-America Honorable Mention. He becomes the program's second honoree, joining first team specialist selection Ernie Mello '12 in 2011.

Petri and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Relays Honored by NEWMAC

Senior Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden) and both the men's and women's 400-yard relay teams drew distinction from the NEWMAC on Monday. Petri took home the Men's Swimmer of the Week award while each quartet was tabbed as their respective Relay of the Week.

Football's Murtagh and McAllen Highlight 26th Annual Steve "Merc" Morris All-Star Team

Senior Brian Murtagh and freshman Sean McAllen garnered major awards in the 26th edition of the Steve "Merc" Morris All-Star Team, as selected by the sports information directors within Worcester Country who sponsor football. Murtagh was tabbed the Co-Defensive Player of the Year while McAllen was selected as the Freshman of the Year. The duo was also honored with first team selections, as well as senior Chad DellaPorta and junior Dereck Pacheco.

Murtagh and Bursey Claim All-East Region Selections from D3football.com

WPI seniors Brian Murtagh and Blaine Bursey have been named to the D3football.com All-East Region team. Murtagh picked up first team accolades as a linebacker while Bursey garnered third team honors as a placekicker.

Ama Biney of Worcester, Mass., Claims D3hoops.com and WACBA Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

Biney averaged 20 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and two steals in a 2-0 week for the Engineers. She was all over the court to deliver her first double-double (20pts, 10reb) on 10-of-12 shooting with five assists and three blocks in 29 minutes at Wellesley. Biney followed it up with 18 points, seven boards, and three steals in 30 minutes at Wheaton.

Sara Velleca of Woodbury, Conn., Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Velleca captured the 200-meter dash (27.11) and was fifth in the 60-meter dash with a Division III New England Championships qualifying time of 8.18. She also teamed with Kimberlee Kocienski, Haylea Northcott and Krystal Grant to place second in the 4x400-meter relay (4:19.65) at the Springfield College Season Opener on Saturday.

Alex Rus of Newton, Mass., Tabbed as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Rus earned a pair of golds in his collegiate debut. After winning the mile in a time of 4:30.86, he teamed with Antoine Harris, Andrew Kelly and Paul-Henry Schoenhagen to close out the Springfield College Season Opener with a first-place time of 3:31.08 in the 4x400-meter relay.

Kristen McCrea of Weymouth, Mass., Lauded as NSCAA NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Third Team All-America

The only rookie to recieve All-America accolades, and to appear on the top two regional teams, McCrea boasted Engineer-bests of 11 assists, 21 points and four game-winners following the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Championship. The tournament's most outstanding player, scored the double OT game-ender versus Springfield in the semifinal and added a pair of assists versus MIT in the title match. She is only the second NSCAA All-America selection in program history, joining Emily Doherty '16.

Women's Soccer Trio Tabbed NSCAA NCAA Division III All-New England

Kristen McCrea, the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, was placed on the first team while sophomore Gabi Hoops and junior Susannah Gray were named to the second team. Gray previously joined McCrea on the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team as Hoops, the NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year, was placed on the second team.

Brendan Nemes of Kingston, Mass., Earns NSCAA NCAA Division III Men's Soccer All-New England Accolades

The NEWMAC All-Conference first team selection paced the Crimson and Gray with seven goals and 16 points. Of the midfielder's seven goals, he scored the game winner versus Nichols, Mass. Maritime and at Emerson. He was also one of three Engineers to start all 17 fixtures. Through three seasons, Nemes has 13 goals - five game-winners - and 31 points in a span of 56 possible games, including starts in the last 37.

Will Pope of Middlebury, Conn., Represents WPI and Liberty League on Academic All-America D-III Football Team

Pope, a biomedical engineering major that did not miss a game in three-plus seasons, aided the Engineers in topping the league in total offense with 413.3 yards per game and ranking second in the league with 31.4 points per game in 2016. The starting right guard is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, a Charles O. Thompson Scholar and a member of the Dean's List.

Connor Willgress of Mill Creek, Wash., Honored as WACBA Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Willgress stuffed the stat sheet with career-best of 15 points and six rebounds along with a pair of steals and an assist to help the Engineers knock off city rival Worcester State on Tuesday. In addition to scoring eight of the game's first 10 points, he was 5 of 8 from the field, including 3 for 4 beyond the arc, to go with a pair of free throws in 27 minutes.

Priscilla Dunphy of Barrington, R.I., Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Dunphy dropped a career-high 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting and added a season-best eight rebounds in Sunday's 61-49 win versus Johnson & Wales. She finished the week with 34 points and 15 boards to help the Engineers go 3-0 and head into conference action with a five-game winning streak.

Jake Wisniewski of West Brookfield, Mass., Named WACBA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week

Wisniewski averaged nine points per game even with seeing limited minutes against Salve Regina Friday night. He debuted with 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists versus Eastern Connecticut. The local product finished the week with 11 points and six boards against DeSales in Saturday's Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament championship contest.

Tyler Marsh of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Tabbed New England Wrestling Association Rookie of the Week

Marsh won both of his matches on Saturday as WPI swept a home Super Quad to start the dual meet season 3-0. The freshman notched a first period pin of the nation's third-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds to put the Engineers up 14-6 in an eventual 21-15 victory versus nationally-ranked Ursinus (PA). Earlier in the day Marsh posted a 15-4 major decision over his opponent from Norwich in a 30-12 triumph over Norwich.

Freshman running back Sean McAllen (Prospect, CT) was named the Liberty League Football Rookie of the Year as seniors Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) and Blaine Bursey (Middleburg, FL) took home first team accolades as voted upon by the league's head coaches following the regular season.

Women's Swimming and Diving Claims All Three NEWMAC Weekly Awards

The WPI women's swimming & diving team claimed all three NEWMAC weekly awards for the week ending Sunday, November 13. Junior Jennifer Day was named the NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week and classmate Kristen Bender earned her third NEWMAC Women's Diver of the Week nod, this time outright. Day also teamed with seniors Eva Childers, Tori Claverie and Emily Martin to earn the NEWMAC Women's Relay Team of the Week accolad

Bauer earned five individual victories as the men's swimming & diving team knocked off Division II Southern Connecticut, the six-time defending NE-10 Champions, and Coast Guard in less than 24 hours.

Maddy Werth of Bedford, Mass., Lands on NEWMAC Women's Volleyball All-Conference Second Team

Werth, who returned following a two year hiatus, was 10th overall in the conference with 272 kills and sixth in NEWAMAC matches with 101. She also paced the Crimson and Gray with a .221 attack percentage in conference play. The OH tallied 427 kills and 209 digs in just two seasons on the court.
