Gurska and Biney Named Academic All-America, as Selected by CoSIDA

WPI junior Lindsay Gurska and sophomore Ama Biney have been named Academic All-America Division III Softball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gurska becomes the second WPI first teamer in as many years while Biney was voted to the third team. Both were recently named All-New England and All-NEWMAC.

Softball's Biney and Murphy-Cook Repeat as NFCA All-New England First Team Honorees

Senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA), junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA), sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) and sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-New England First Team, as announced Monday. Freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) made the list as a third teamer. All five were previously honored by the NEWMAC with All-Conference nods.

Gurska and Goldstein Garner NEWMAC Softball Major Awards; Five Named All-NEWMAC

Junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) and head coach Whitney Goldstein became the first from WPI to be named the NEWMAC Softball Athlete of the Year and NEWMAC Softball Coach of the Year, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Gurska was joined on the first team by sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) and senior batterymate Clare Doolin (Newton, MA). Sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) were named to the second team.

Baseball's Venditti, Gallagher and Callahan Haul in Major Awards; Four Named All-NEWMAC

Senior Alex Venditti (Newton, MA), freshman Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI) and head coach Mike Callahan earned NEWMAC Baseball postseason awards as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Venditti was also named to the All-NEWMAC first team while senior Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, NY), junior Mike Vaitkunas (Auburn, MA) and senior John Mulready (Rockland, MA) represented the Engineers on the second team.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Announces 2016 Provost's MQP Winners

The MQP, typically completed in the senior year, is a high-level design or research experience in the student's major field. In the engineering disciplines, many of these design projects are completed in small teams with a faculty advisor. In the sciences, many of these projects are completed by undergraduates working closely in the faculty advisor's research lab. Some MQPs are completed at off-campus project centers for external sponsors, often corporations.

Nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable). In baseball and softball, pitchers must have at least 10.0 innings pitched.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Announces Salisbury Prize Winners for 2016

The Salisbury Prize was instituted in 1871 by Stephen Salisbury, a 19th century businessman and philanthropist who was one of the founders of WPI. Salisbury established the award to recognize outstanding members of the senior class "who have faithfully, industriously, and with distinguished attainment" completed all course and project requirements for the bachelor's degree.

Venditti, who is in contention for the conference triple crown (1st in homers - 13; 1st in RBI - 55; 2nd in batting average - .441), slugged an eye-popping 1.056 last week, was on-base at a .700 clip (9 walks and a HBP) and successfully handled all 27 of his defensive chances.
