Andover's Azita Bakhtyari Earns Back-to-Back Google Cloud Volleyball Academic All-America Honors

WPI senior Azita Bakhtyari has been named as a repeat Google Cloud Women's Volleyball Academic All-America, as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bakhtyari was one of five student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA to earn a spot on the first team. She was joined by MIT senior Abby Bertics, who headlined the scroll as the Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. In all, 11 of the student-athletes boasted a perfect GPA including eight seniors. In addition to joining Stacey Cotton (1988, 1989) as the program's only back-to-back selections, the duo is now linked as the program's only two first team selections.

400 Free Relay Lauded as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Senior Jean Philippe Miralda, freshman Sid Williams, graduate student Craig Barrett and senior Jack Bauer was just over a second quicker (3:08.79-3:09.83) than No. 18 Williams to secure the 151-150 triumph. The Engineers also bested No. 11 Tufts and host Wesleyan.

WPI junior Dave Chen was named as the NEWMAC Men's Swimmer of the Week and the 400-yard freestyle quartet of senior Jean Philippe Miralda, freshman Sid Williams, graduate student Craig Barrett and senior Jack Bauer was lauded as the NEWMAC Men's Relay of the Week.

Charlton's Bailey Savage Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Savage averaged 14 points and 4.5 rebounds, and totaled four assists and two steals in the Engineers 1-1 week. After tying her career-high of 11 points at the half versus Clark, the freshman went on to share game-high honors with 15 on the day.

Clearfield's Spencer Herrington Repeats as D3football.com All-East Region Selection

A first team kicker a year ago, Herrington was named to the 2018 third team to become the program's second two-time recipient (Brian Murtagh 2015, 2016). It is also the third straight honor for a WPI kicker.

Cumberland's Jack Bauer Named WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Bauer clocked a pair of B cuts as he won his third 100-yard backstroke (49.22) and second 200-yard backstroke (1:48.52) at the Gompei Invitational. The six-time individual champion was second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.82) and third in the 100-yard IM (52.78). He is atop the conference leaderboard in the 100 and 200 backstrokes while the 100 IM ranks second, the 50 fly is third and the 100 fly is sixth. His 50 back split is currently third. Bauer was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay, third-place 400-yard medley relay, and fourth-place 200 and 800 free relays, as well as the sixth-place 400 free relay.

Shrewsbury's Riley Doherty Adds United Soccer Coaches All-New England Accolades to Resume

WPI senior back Riley Doherty was selected as a United Soccer Coaches All-New England second team honoree. It is the third consecutive year, and fifth time in six years, at least one Engineer has been recognized.

Westford's Katherine Pawlak Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

The freshman set the 50-yard freestyle school record with a fifth-place 24.16 on Friday night. Pawlak was also seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke (31.25), 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the C final winner (21st) in the 100-yard freestyle. The 50 breast leads the conference while the 50 free is fourth. the 100 free is eighth and the 100 breast is ninth. She also topped the NEWMAC leaderboard with a 26.93 in the 50-yard butterfly trials. As part of a relay, Pawlak was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, eighth in the 400-yard freestyle, 10th in the 200-yard medley, and 14th in the 400-yard medley.

WPI junior midfielder Kristen McCrea has garnered All-New England accolades from the United Soccer Coaches for the third time in as many seasons. McCrea was named to the first team in 2016 and 2018.

Auburn's Shannon Hynes Garners NFHCA All-New England East Recognition

WPI junior back Shannon Hynes has been honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) as an All-New England East second team selection. It is the first time an Engineer has been recognized since recent WPI Hall of Fame inductee Kelly Johnson was voted to the second team in 2009.

Now in its third year, the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.

Spencer Vinson of Los Angeles, Calif., Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Vinson came off the bench to score 11 points and haul in a career-high 10 rebounds in Tuesday's home win over Nichols. The junior currently leads the 4-1 Crimson and Gray in scoring (11.8 ppg), rebounding (8.8 rpg) and blocks (4) and is second in steals (5).

Dan Wensley of Wakefield, Mass., Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Wensley, who entered the week third in New England and ninth in the nation at 184, defeated the fourth-ranked wrestler in the country by capitalizing on the riding time point to win 3-2 as the No. 12 Engineers rallied to defeat Western New England on Tuesday. The junior is now 8-1 on the season.

Reid Walker of Lithia, Fla., Secures Men's Basketball's First-Ever NEWMAC Weekly Defensive Honor

Walker notched 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in Tuesday's successful meeting with Worcester State. The sophomore also handed out three assists and recorded a block in the 90-71 triumph. On the season, Walker leads the Engineers in both scoring (13.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.8 rpg) while second on the team in assists with 15.

Garrett Stephenson of Townsend, Mass., Tabbed as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Stephenson averaged 13.3 points and eight rebounds, and was named the MVP of the fourth annual Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament, in a 3-0 week. He began with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds against Albertus Magnus in the season opener on Tuesday. For the weekend, Stephenson totaled 12 points, eight boards and seven assists in the semifinal win over SUNY Potsdam and 15 points and six rebounds in the title game versus William Paterson. He also notched a pair of blocks versus Albertus Magnus and SUNY Potsdam.

Cailin Goneya of Southbridge, Mass., Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Gonyea turned in the quickest 1,000-yard freestyle time of the week among NEWMAC competitors with a third-place 10:59.44 in Saturday's meet with nationally-ranked MIT and Bowdoin. The performance is currently third on the conference leaderboard so far this season. The junior was also fourth in the 500-yard version of the event with a 5:27.00 while her time from the previous week is currently fourth in the NEWMAC rankings.

Tyler Marsh of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Named NEWA Co-Wrestler of the Week

Marsh, an NCAA Championship participant a season ago, and currently ranked seventh nationally, was dominant on opening weekend at the Ursinus Fall Brawl, pinning all four of his opponents. The junior registered second period falls in his first two bouts before pinning his opponent from Delaware Valley (2:25) in the semifinals and a nationally-ranked foe from York (2:26) in the finals at nearly the identical time in the first period.

Vinson narrowly averaged a double-double on the week with 10.5 points and eight rebounds en route to All-Tournament honors as the Engineers secured their fifth consecutive Worcester City Championship. The junior totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block in the opener versus Becker on Friday and followed up with eight points and nine rebounds in the title game versus Worcester State.

Clearfield's Spencer Herrington Once Again Cited as NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week

Herrington provided two field goals, including a career-long of 42, and two PATs in the first half a 20-17 triumph over Norwich on Saturday. He also punted five times for an average of 37 yards, including one for 54 yards and one downed inside the 20. The victory secured the Engineers fourth consecutive winning season for the first time in a quarter century.

Chen claimed the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.40) and was on both winning relays (200 Medley, 200 Free) Friday night versus Babson and Brandeis. During the season-opening Worcester City Championships, Chen was part of four wins and meet records en route to Justin Ferris (WPI) Swimmer of the Meet honors.

Eight From Cross Country Earn All-NEWMAC Honors

Women's Cross Country's Sydney Packard, Emily Newman, Keely Nistler and Ari Rozen and Men's Cross Country's Brian Brooks, Michael Brady, Avery Ingegneri and Tom Hanlon all finished in the top 14 at the 2018 NEWMAC Championships at Smith on October 27.

Molly Sykes of Falmouth, Mass., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Sykes was the fastest in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.72) and 400-yard IM (4:42.14), as well as a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay as the Engineers defeated Babson, Smith, Brandeis and Simmons Friday night. In her debut at the Worcester City Championships, Sykes handed in a trio of top 3 individual finishes and was part of two third-place relays.

Maddie Blake of Bedford, N.H., Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Blake earned MVP honors as the Engineers claimed their fifth-consecutive Worcester City Tournament title on Saturday. The sophomore poured in a career and game-high 20 points to go with five rebounds in the semifinal versus Becker and added eight points, four rebounds and a pair of steals in a come-from-behind victory over Worcester State in the title game.
