Dave Chen of Niantic, Conn., Named as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Chen claimed the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.40) and was on both winning relays (200 Medley, 200 Free) Friday night versus Babson and Brandeis. During the season-opening Worcester City Championships, Chen was part of four wins and meet records en route to Justin Ferris (WPI) Swimmer of the Meet honors.

Tyler Marsh of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Honored as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Marsh, an NCAA Championship participant a season ago, and currently ranked sixth nationally, was dominant on opening weekend at the Ursinus Fall Brawl, pinning all four of his opponents at 157 pounds. The junior registered second period falls in his first two bouts before pinning his opponent from Delaware Valley (2:25) in the semifinals and York (2:26) at nearly the identical time in the first period.

Eight From Cross Country Earn All-NEWMAC Honors

Women's Cross Country's Sydney Packard, Emily Newman, Keely Nistler and Ari Rozen and Men's Cross Country's Brian Brooks, Michael Brady, Avery Ingegneri and Tom Hanlon all finished in the top 14 at the 2018 NEWMAC Championships at Smith on October 27.

Molly Sykes of Falmouth, Mass., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Sykes was the fastest in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.72) and 400-yard IM (4:42.14), as well as a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay as the Engineers defeated Babson, Smith, Brandeis and Simmons Friday night. In her debut at the Worcester City Championships, Sykes handed in a trio of top 3 individual finishes and was part of two third-place relays.

Maddie Blake of Bedford, N.H., Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Blake earned MVP honors as the Engineers claimed their fifth-consecutive Worcester City Tournament title on Saturday. The sophomore poured in a career and game-high 20 points to go with five rebounds in the semifinal versus Becker and added eight points, four rebounds and a pair of steals in a come-from-behind victory over Worcester State in the title game.

Eleven From WPI Football Named NEWMAC All-Conference

Spencer Herrington was joined on the first team by senior offensive lineman Nick Day, junior defensive back Sam Casey, junior running back Sean McAllen, junior defensive lineman Mike McGoff and junior linebacker Nick Ostrowski. The second team featured senior linebacker Blayne Merchant, senior defensive back Collin Saunders, junior offensive lineman Vince Lucca, junior wide receiver Nic Rossi and sophomore defensive lineman Lou Duh.

Spencer Herrington of Clearfield, Pa., Adds D3football.com Team of the Week Honors to Resume (Oct. 30)

Herrington connected on two fourth-quarter field goals in adverse conditions one from 41 yards and one from 31 with less than six minutes left in the game versus MIT on Homecoming. The senior outscored both teams as he drilled a PAT for a total of seven points on the day. He also boomed eight punts for 170 yards for an average of 21.3 with a long of 54 and two touchbacks, including one that narrowly missed going out at the 1 yard line. The 41-yard field goal tied his career best at the time.

Spencer Herrington of Clearfield, Pa., Repeats as NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Year

Herrington, the inaugural special teams athlete of the year and first team selection in 2017, led the NEWMAC in points, field goals made and extra points made. In all, he was 12-for-15 with a career-long 42-yard field goal and 30-for-30 in extra point opportunities. His with 66 points also tied for second amongst all NEWMAC student-athletes. Herrington concludes his career a perfect 75-for-75 in PATs, 22-for-27 in field goals, and 141 points. As a punter, Herrington boomed 113 for 3882 career yards with a long of 55 and eight landing inside the 20.

Women's Soccer Trio Nets NEWMAC All-Conference Accolades

WPI senior Gabriela Hoops and junior Kristen McCrea have earned NEWMAC Women's Soccer All-Conference accolades for the third consecutive year. The duo was named to the first team while sophomore Leah Beauton landed on the second team.

Five From WPI Men's Soccer Named All-NEWMAC

Senior Riley Doherty and junior Ben Rickson headlined WPI's NEWMAC Men's Soccer All-Conference honorees as voted upon by the conference head coaches following the regular season. Doherty and Rickson were named to the first team while sophomore Rufus Adams, junior Mark Calnan and junior Jackson Conroy were named to the second team.

WPI junior Shannon Hynes was selected as a NEWMAC Field Hockey All-Conference first team selection while sophomore Abby O'Sullivan and freshman Angie Ferro were named to the second team, as voted upon by the league's head coaches following the regular season.

Andover's Azita Bakhtyari Named to NEWMAC Women's Volleyball All-Conference Second Team

Bakhtyari, the seventh different Engineer to be recognized by the NEWMAC or NEW 8 and is the third WPI selection in four years following a lengthy absence, was fourth in assists (351) and assists per set (9.75) in conference contests. Overall, the dental school hopeful was seventh in both categories despite missing a handful of matches due to interviews.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable) and he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Herrington and Ostrowski Collect NEWMAC Football Weekly Accolades

WPI senior Spencer Herrington has been selected as the NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week and junior Nick Ostrowski has been named as the NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week for their efforts in Saturday's 13-6 win over previously unbeaten MIT. Herrington was once again lauded by Noontime Sports and Ostrowski was tabbed as the WPI Men's Student Athlete of the Week earlier in the day.

WPI junior Dave Chen was named as the NEWMAC Men's Swimmer of the Week while he and his 400-yard medley relay teammates, Jack Bauer, Jackson Perry and Craig Barrett, were lauded as the NEWMAC Men's Swimming Relay of the Week for their performances at the Worcester City Championships.

Northboro's Angie Ferro Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Ferro scored both game-ending goals in a pair of overtime victories this past week. On Tuesday, the freshman lifted the Engineers to a 4-3 triumph over Fitchburg State in the first-ever fall varsity game played on Rooftop Field. She ended the week with the decisive tally in Friday night's 3-2 victory at Mount Holyoke to secure the team's first home NEWMAC tournament game since 2008.

Ostrowski tied for a team-high eight tackles and forced two fumbles in Saturday's win over previously unbeaten MIT. For his efforts, the junior was the Robert Pritchard Award defensive honoree on Homecoming.

Melissa Bazakas-Chamberlain, Christine Hovermale, Kinsey McNamara, Marlies de Jong, Amelia Harvey, Rachel Lia, Caitlin Kean, Eva Barinelli and coxswain Madison Healey placed third and earned a medal in its toughest test of the fall season at the historic Head of the Charles.

Rufus Adams of Duxbury, Mass., Named NEWMAC Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Adams did not allow a goal in 245 minutes of work as the Engineers went 2-0-1 on the road last week. The sophomore's only save in a first half of work for Elmira was a memorable one as he stopped a PK in WPI's 4-0 victory over the Soaring Eagles. Adams then made four stops as WPI and Springfield played to a 0-0 double overtime Saturday. It was the third straight scoreless draw for the two team which shared the NEWMAC regular season title and played in the conference tournament title game in 2017. Adams wrapped up his week by making a pair of saves in a 2-0 blanking of Mitchell on Sunday.

Victoria Nassar of Atkinson, N.H., Honored as NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week

Nassar averaged 16.5 digs and added seven aces and three assists as the Crimson and Gray went 2-2 last week, including 1-1 against other regionally-ranked opponents. The tri-captain began her week my amassing 19 digs as the Engineers stayed in the race for a NEWMACTournament home match with a 3-1 road win at Wheaton. Nassar's strong week of play was highlighted by being named to the All-Tournament team at the Hall of Fame Invitational where she posted double digits digs against Trinity (16), Hamilton (21) and Amherst (10).

Barre's Lindsey Giorgi Named NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week

Giorgi notched the first two points of her career Saturday as WPI blanked MIT, 4-0. The sophomore assisted on the second and third goal, and helped keep the host Engineers, who are receiving votes in the NFHCA national poll, off the board.

Kristen McCrea of Weymouth, Mass., Selected as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

The junior netted the lone goal in a 1-0 triumph over visiting Mount Holyoke Saturday. The game winner was McCrea's third of the season and eighth of her career. It also marked the fourth consecutive season, and fifth time in six years, head coach Steph Riley-Schafer's squad has achieved double-digit wins.

Medway's Michael Brady Collects Second NEWMAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Nod

Brady was 12th overall and the top NEWMAC runner at the Conn College Invitational Saturday at Harkness State Park. The senior led the Engineers to an eighth-place team showing, which was eight points behind No. 29 St. Thomas (MN) with a time of 25:20.7 or 5:05.9 per mile.
