Four WPI Women's Rowers Named NEWMAC All-Conference

The WPI trio of sophomore Kinsey McNamara, junior Jasmine Loukola and freshman Christine Hovermale, and were named first team All-NEWMAC as the Engineers were second overall at the NEWMAC Women's Rowing Championships hosted Saturday by Clark on Lake Quinsigamond. Sophomore coxswain Madison Healey headlined the second team.

Led by 15 three-time honorees, 60 WPI spring student-athletes across five sports achieved NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status. Women's Rowing led the conference while Baseball and Women's Track & Field tied for the top spot on their lists while the track programs boasted 16 selections each.

Women's Track & Field's 4x400-Meter Relay Reels in NEWMAC Weekly Accolades

The WPI women's track and Field 4x400-meter relay was selected as the NEWMAC Relay Team of the Week. It is the first quartet since last year's 4x100-meter relay was feted for the week ending April 3, 2016. It is also the first relay other than the 4x100 to claim the award, which also earned it twice in 2015.

Gurska and Arpin Earn Final NEWMAC Softball Weekly Accolades of 2017

WPI senior catcher Lindsay Gurska and junior pitcher Casey Arpin have been tabbed as the NEWMAC Softball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The last WPI battery to accomplish the feat were Gurska and Clare Doolin '16 for the week ending April 17, 2016.

Lucas Gagne of Franklin, N.H., Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Gagne took third in the discus with a huge PR of 136-8 at the Springfield College Classic. The performance was better than the 130-9 he achieved last week at Coast Guard. He was also fifth in the hammer with a distance of 134-11.

Varsity Eight Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

The ninth-ranked Varsity Eight in Division III consisting of senior Gina Gonzalez-Roundey, freshman Christine Hovermale, junior Jasmine Loukola, junior Sarah Wutka, sophomore Marlies de Jong, sophomore Kinsey McNamara, sophomore Eva Barinelli, senior Jennifer Golden and sophomore coxswain Madison Healey finished a close second to No. 4 Tufts in the Bernie Brown Cup Sunday.

Steven Gallagher of Coventry, R.I., Earns Weekly Honors

The third baseman hit .579 with eye-popping 1.368 slugging and .615 on-base percentages (1.983 OPS) in a 5-0 week for the Engineers. Five of his 11 hits were home runs for 26 total bases to go with 16 RBI and 12 runs scored. Gallagher's home run proved to be the difference Tuesday at Emerson before adding four more, including a game one grand slam, Saturday versus Coast Guard.

Renee LeClaire of Merrimack, N.H., Tabbed NEWMAC Softball Co-Athlete of the Week

LeClaire led the Engineers with a .500 batting average with a walk, four doubles, 13 RBI, six runs, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base. She clubbed three hits in game two at Smith and game one versus Wellesley, and two in game ones at Worcester State and against Clark en route to extending her hitting streak to 18 games. LeClaire was also 36-for-36 at first base.

Austin Scott of Waddington, N.Y., Takes Home NEWMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week Accolades

Scott set the 5,000-meter run record with a 14:54.49 during the elite distance portion of the Conn. College Silfen Invitational. The top NEWMAC time of the season was better than the 14:56.10 that Justin Lutz '02 handed in back in 2001. The performance was also quicker than the NEWMAC meet record time of 14:55.82 set by MIT's Sean Nolan in 2002 and would have been 10th at last year's NCAA Championships.

Sydney Packard of Georgetown, Mass., Pockets NEWMAC Women's Track Weekly Honor

Packard, who turned in a NEWMAC-best 1,500m time last week, won the 800-meter run with a new school record time of 2:13.92 during the elite distance portion of the Conn College Silfen Invitational Friday night. Her time, which qualifies for the DIII New England and NEICAAA Championships, sits atop the NEWMAC performance list and is 12th in Division III.

Abby McAdams of Montville, Conn., Tabbed as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

McAdams took third in the heptathlon and reset her own standard with 4,101 points at the Conn. College Silfen Invitational to end the weekend 14th in Division III.

Men's Track & Field's 4x100-meter Relay Earns NEWMAC Weekly Honor

Freshman Nick Fleury, freshman Alex Rus, senior Brian D'Amore, and senior Hugh Whelan collaborated to clock the quickest 4x100-meter relay time within the conference so far this season at the Amherst Spring Fling. Their 43.17 is also fifth on the Division III New England performance list.

Varsity Eight Honored as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

The boat comprised of Nathan Pietrowicz (Worcester, MA), Jackson Krupnick (Ashville, NC), Michael Beinor (Sutton, MA), Jeremy Hemingway (Westford, MA), Danny Singer (Eldersburg, MD), Frank Campanelli (Avon, CT), Isaac Beeman (Sammamish, WA) and Dean Schifilliti (Ossining, NY) and coxswain Kelsey Regan (Winchendon, MA) edged Bates, the reigning New England Champion, 5:57.84 to 5:58.30 in Sunday's head-to-head regatta.

Doug Rives of Bethany, Conn., Pockets NEWMAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week Accolades

Rives did not allow an earned run in 6 2/3 and struck out a career-high nine batters in the Engineers NEWMAC victory over Emerson on Tuesday. For the season the sophomore boasts a 4-0 record and a save in five appearances. He also touts a 1.82 ERA and 26 strikeouts.

Ryan Tropeano of Pembroke, Mass., Tabbed WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Tropeano hit .444 with a double and a triple to go with a pair of RBI and two runs scored during a 2-0 week. He led the team with seven total bases and was one of three to steal a pair. Tropeano also touted an OPS of 1.278 (.778 slugging, .500 on-base). He is batting .479 on the season with six doubles, two triples and a home run to go with 13 RBI, 29 runs scored and an OPS of 1.210 (.662 slugging, .548 on-base).

Jasmine Higuera Castillo of Riverside, Calif., Named WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

iguera Castillo won the 10,000-meter run Sunday at the Tufts Snowflake Classic. The junior bettered her PR by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 39:16.87, which ranks third on the NEWMAC performance list. She led a field featuring a student-athlete from Division I Boston University and six from either Colby-Sawyer, Tufts and Worcester State.

Tyler Marsh Paces Engineers With Four New England Wrestling Association Accolades

Tyler Marsh was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Co-Rookie of the year as eight Engineers were honored for their work on the mat and an association-best 22 were recognized for their performance in the classroom.

Nick Comei of Haverhill, Mass., Selected as NEWMAC Baseball Player of the Week

Comei finished with a slash line of .524/1.095/.583 with eight RBI and seven extra base hits in the Engineers' 4-1 week. He began with a trio of multi-hit games, highlighted by a 5-for-5 performance with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored versus Nichols. In the field, Comei made one error in 32 total chances, but made up for it as a part of a pair of double plays.

Kelsey Saucier of Worcester, Mass., Honored as WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week

Saucier spun a two-hit gem through six innings Saturday to earn her 20th career victory and help key a split in the NEWMAC doubleheader at Wheaton. She struck out a season-high eight batters to bring her total to 27 on the year and 180 for her career.

Keith Scales of Upper Marlboro, Md., Selected as WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week

Scales was pressed into service early in Monday's (Mar. 20) game versus Gordon. He proceeded to earn his first collegiate win with a solid seven-inning performance. Scales, who struck out five batters, did not allow a run on four hits and two walks.

Women's Basketball's Biney and Dunphy Feted by New England Women's Basketball Association

Junior Ama Biney and senior Priscilla Dunphy were recently honored by the New England Women's Baseball Association. Biney was tabbed as a First Team All-Region selection while Dunphy received an invite to the organization's annual Senior All-Star Classic.

WPI Men's Swimming & Diving Places 16th at NCAA Division III Championships

Jack Bauer earned an individual (7th, 100 back) and relay (6th, 200 medley) All-America and the Engineers racked up three solo and two relay honorable mention All-Americas en route to a 16th place finish overall, and fourth in New England, at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. Bauer, Tim Petri, Karim Elsayed and Andrew Bauer set the program record for best relay placing at the event while a number of time records fell during the four-day competition. Frederick Burgwardt, Andrew Kelleher and Seth MacDonald were a part of one or more of the honorable mention relays.

Tim Petri of Eksjo, Sweden, Named WPI's First-Ever NCAA Elite 90 Recipient

Senior Tim Petri has the distinction of becoming the first WPI student-athlete to earn the NCAAs coveted Elite 90 Award, as announced at the 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships banquet Tuesday night.

WACBA and Noontime Sports Hand Out Postseason Awards

WPI junior Ama Biney was unanimously selected as the Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Women's Player of the Year. The voting was conducted by the sports information departments from the nine four-year schools in Worcester County, including Assumption and Holy Cross, as well as three members of the local media.

Shevchuk Leads Field Hockey to 13th Consecutive NFHCA National Academic Team Award

Senior Hope Shevchuk claimed her fourth National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Scholar of Distinction honor while 10 others were also named to the National Academic Squad and the team earned its 13th consecutive National Academic Team Award.
