Tyler Marsh of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Competes at NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

Tyler Marsh made his debut on the national stage on Friday, taking part in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by Baldwin Wallace in Cleveland, Ohio. The sophomore, who finished second at the Northeast Regional hosted by WPI the last weekend in February was one of 18 competitors in the 157-pound weight class.

Marsh matched up in the first round with top-seeded Ryan Epps (38-1) from national power Augsburg (MN) and used a takedown a minute in to lead 2-0. He rode Epps for 1:29 before the Augsburg wrestler was able to escape and cut the deficit to 2-1 after a period. Epps won the coin toss and deferred to Marsh, who selected down. The top-seeded Epps took control from that point and advanced to the quarterfinals by registering a pin at 3:53.

Unfortunately Marsh suffered an injury in the closing moments of his bout and was forced to medically forfeit to Kevin Edwards from Messiah in the consolation round and was just two wins short of becoming WPI's 10th different All-American for the 13th total time. The sophomore finishes the 2017-18 season with an impressive 31-6 record and was one of four Engineers to be named as a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Marsh's appearance in the NCAA Championships caps an outstanding season for WPI Wrestling, which went 18-4 dual meet record, placed second in the 17-team Northeast Regional and third in the 16-team New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships in January.
