Tim Petri of Eksjo, Sweden, Named WPI's First-Ever NCAA Elite 90 Recipient

2017 Mar 20

Senior Tim Petri has the distinction of becoming the first WPI student-athlete to earn the NCAAs coveted Elite 90 Award, as announced at the 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships banquet Tuesday night.

The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Petri, a computer science major with a 4.0 GPA in 135 credit hours, received his invite to the national event as part of the 14th-seeded 400-yard medley relay. He is also eligible to compete in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. The school record holder in all three events handed in his best 100 time at Wesleyan and his 200 at the NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships. The relay record was also reset at the conference meet.
