Tim Petri of Bruzaholm, Sweden, Earns CoSIDA Academic All-District Laurels

Tim Petri has been recognized by CoSIDA for his work in the pool and in the classroom.

Seniors Andrew Bauer and Tim Petri, and sophomore Jack Bauer have garnered Academic All-District I at-large accolades, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The trio moves on to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

Andrew Bauer, a mechanical engineering major and repeat district honoree, collected All-America honors in the 200-yard medley relay and four honorable mention All-America accolades during his third trip to the NCAA Championships in March. Prior to that, he won the 200-yard freestyle and was a five-time runner up at the NEWMAC Championships. The 2016 NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year earned All-America status in the 800-yard freestyle relay and was an honorable mention in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. His first trip to the NCAAs yielded honorable mention laurels in the 800 free relay. The co-captain assisted Habitat for Humanity for his IQP and developed device to harness wind energy using kites to pump water for developing nations for his MQP. Andrew Bauer is also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and the Investment Club. The department award winner in three of four years owns eight records, including all five active relays, and set three at the NCAAs.

Petri, a computer science major, became the first WPI student-athlete to earn the coveted Elite 90 award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships. He received his invite to the NCAAs as part of the 14th-seeded 400-yard medley relay. When the competition began, Petri set records in the relay, as well as the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. He also owns the Engineers' 50-yard breastbone standard. In addition to All-America honors in the 200-yard medley relay and honorable mention AA accolades in the 400-yard medley and 200-yard breaststroke, Petri is a six-time All-NEWMAC second teamer as a four-time 400-yard medley relay and two-time 200-yard medley relay runner up. The Charles O. Thompson Scholar was a Crimson Key tour guide and founding vice president of the Investment Association. He is also a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and Upsilon Pi Epsilon honor society. His IQP involved a transportation smartphone app study in Namibia and is working with Microsoft for his MQP.

Jack Bauer, the 2017 NEWMAC Co-Swimmer of the Year, won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke titles and was a three-time runner up. He made the trip to the NCAAs where he earned All-America honors in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard medley relay to go with an honorable mention AA in the 400-yard medley relay. As the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 2016, Jack Bauer was a member of the NEWMAC Champion 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays, and runner up 400-yard medley and freestyle relays. The repeat department award winner set four records at the national event and one at the conference championships for a total of five.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable) and he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
