Spencer Herrington of Clearfield, Pa., Earns NEWMAC Football Weekly Award

Herrington Herrington was recognized as the WPI football program garnered the distinction of being the first to sweep all three NEWMAC weekly awards.

Sophomore Sean McAllen was named the NEWMAC Football Offensive Athlete of the Week while classmate Nick Ostrowski was tabbed as the NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week and junior Spencer Herrington picked up his third NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week honor, including second in as many weeks.

McAllen scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in a 24-21 triumph over MIT Saturday. The sophomore racked up 185 yards on 27 carries, including a 75-yard score with 1:38 to play. The Boynton Hiller's last four-game streak opened the 2007 campaign and it is the first four-game conference streak since the Freedom Football Conference championship year in 1993.

Ostrowski, who was also named WPI Men's Student-Athlete of the Week, totaled a career-high 11 tackles, forced a fumble and returned an interception on the final play of the first half 55 yards for a touchdown. The sophomore's forced fumble also resulted in a WPI touchdown with the change of possession in the first quarter.

Herrington, who also has the distinction of being the first-ever NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week, added six more points his resume Saturday. He began by capping a seven-play, 70-yard opening drive with a 20-yard field goal. The junior went on to boom five punts for 176 yards, including a pair inside the 20. The NEWMAC kicker scoring leader is also fifth overall in the conference with 56 points.

WPI (6-2, 4-1) hosts Coast Guard (3-5, 1-4) Saturday at noon on Senior Day.
