Nicholas Day of Florence, Mass., Receives National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American Distinction

Nicholas Day has earned Division III Scholar All-American honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Additionally the Engineers were recognized as a top 30 program nationwide, seeing their starters compile a 3.26 GPA, the 11th highest overall.

To earn an individual Scholar All-American honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average for the previous full academic year. Transfers and freshmen are eligible if they've been in residence at their current institution beginning in the fall of 2015. On the competition side, wrestlers much be a national qualifier in 2015-16 and have a minimum win percentage of at least .500. Additionally, wrestlers can also be considered if they placed in the top six at their respective regional tournament, a win percentage of .500 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled competition in NCAA championship events. A wrestler can also be considered if they have a win percentage of .670 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled NCAA events.

Brian Amato amassed a 22-10 record in his junior campaign, tallying a pair of pins, four tech falls and a pair of major decisions. An All-American as a sophomore, Amato posted several victories over regionally-ranked opponents in 2015-2016 and a triumph over a nationally-ranked wrestling from Brockport. A biology/ biotechnology major, Amato is a American Legion Military Excellence Award winner as a member of the Army ROTC. He boasts a 3.35 GPA over the past academic year.

Nick Day made a seamless transition from the football field to the wrestling mat during his freshman season, winning 11 of his 16 matches. The heavyweight was able to rack up valuable team points with six falls and two major decisions among his seven wins. Day is a civil and mechanical engineering double major who amassed a 3.25 GPA over his first full semester on Boynton Hill.

"We are very proud of the academic achievements that we have made as a program", commented head Steve Hall. "These are tangible results of our initiative to coach the whole athlete above and beyond what happens on the mat."

As a team WPI also enjoyed tremendous success on the mat, totaling a dual meet record of 15-9, their most wins since the 2003-04 campaign. The Engineers finished the season strong, sweeping a tri-meet with nationally-ranked Williams and Springfield and placing sixth at the 18-team NCAA Northeast regional.
