Lindsay Gurska of Revere, Mass., Earns NEWMAC Softball Weekly Accolade

2016 Apr 21

Lindsay Gurska has earned a NEWMAC Softball Weekly Award.

The WPI softball battery of senior pitcher Clare Doolin (Newton, Mass.) and junior catcher Lindsay Gurska (Revere, Mass.) have been named the NEWMAC Pitcher and Co-Player of the Week for their performances the week ending Sunday, April 17. Gurska shares the accolade with senior Tori Jensen (Holliston, Mass.) from league-leading MIT.

Doolin won the first game of all four of WPI's doubleheaders last week to help the Engineers post a 7-1 record, including a 6-0 mark versus NEWMAC opponents. The senior captain hurled 21 innings, yielding just three runs, 15 hits and three walks while striking out 23. Doolin bookended her week with complete games, beginning with a 10 strikeout performance against Coast Guard and ending with a three-hit shutout versus Wellesley.

Gurska continued her outstanding season by record a hit and a run in all eight of the Engineers games last week. The junior batted .500 (11-for-22) with eight runs scored, and nine batted in. Gurska, who is in the top three in all three of the triple crown categories, belted homers in victories against Worcester State and Smith and caught all 41 innings without an error.

The Engineers (27-5), who are currently second in the NEWMAC standings, return to action Wednesday when the team welcomes Westfield State to Rooftop Field for a 4pm non-conference set. WPI then heads to MIT for a crucial 3pm twinbill Friday before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday versus Babson at noon.
