Kurt Naugler of Westford, Mass., Named NEWMAC Men's Soccer All-Conference
2015 Nov 12
Kurt Naugler was one of four WPI Men's Soccer student-athletes to achieve NEWMAC All-Conference status.
Senior Kurt Naugler and sophomore Connor Hoeckele were placed on the first team while senior Chris Murray and junior Nate Peterson landed on the second team.
Naugler notched three goals and eight assists this past season. In addition to a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in the Worcester City Tounament opener versus Becker, Naugler posted multiple point games at Clark, versus Wheaton, against Fitchburg State and Anna Maria (goal). For his career, Naugler scored 12 goals, eight of which were game-winners, and pitched in with 15 assists for 39 points in 70 games.
Hoeckele went 6-6-1 on the year with three shutouts and a 0.90 GAA. Within the conference portion of the season, Hoeckele's goals against average was even better (0.85). He finished the season slotted third amongst NEWMAC goalkeepers with a .800 save percentage while his overall GAA ranked fourth. Among his successes was a key draw at Coast Guard and a win against Wheaton.
Murray, also a second team selection in 2014, tied for seventh in the conference with seven goals, including a tie for fourth with three game-winners, and was tied for sixth with 18 points. In addition to his game-winner at Clark, Murray scored against Emerson and provided the lone goal in the NEWMAC quarterfinal at Springfield. In all, Murray notched seven multiple point games with a season best four (two goals, GWG) in the Worcester City Tournament against Worcester State. In all, Murray deposited 19 goals and handed out 15 helpers for 53 points with eight-game winners in 70 games played.
Peterson, another key cog on the Engineers back line, has been described as the best ball winner on our team and perhaps in the entire conference. He has also contributed to the offense with a pair of goals and an assist. His first goal came in the Worcester City Tournament versus Worcester State as he later provided the equalizer against nationally-ranked Amherst.
The Engineers claimed the fifth-seed in the 2015 NEWMAC Men's Soccer Championship following their fourth consecutive double-digit win season overall (11-7-2) and a 3-3-1 ledger in league play under third-year head coach Brian Kelley. WPI took nationally-ranked Brandeis and Amherst to double overtime in a span of five matches that included a total of seven extra sessions and back-to-back OT wins at Clark (2OT) and Salve Regina.
