Game Story -

Freshman Kristen McCrea notched a pair of assists Sunday as the WPI women's soccer team earned its first NEWMAC championship in program history with a 3-1 triumph over visiting MIT at Alumni Stadium. In addition to her helpers, McCrea scored the double OT game-winner in yesterday's semifinal and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

WPI, slotted seventh in the NCAA Division III New England regional rankings, improves to 16-2-2 and secures the conference's auto bid to the NCAA tournament. MIT, the eighth team in the region, slips to 17-5-1. More information will be available following tomorrow's 1:30pm NCAA.com selection show.

Senior Emma Turton bookended the scoring with goals in the 54th and 79th minutes. The first was setup by McCrea while the second was unassisted. McCrea then aided junior Sophie Gomarlo tally what proved to be the game-winner at 59:36. Freshman Allie Werner teamed up with sophomore Allie Hrabchak (Princeton, NJ) to score the lone MIT goal at 70:33.

McCrea looked to put the hosts up in the eighth minute but her laser was denied by senior Lauren Ullmann. The Crimson and Gray had another great chance when graduate student Jaime Espinola narrowly missed in the 38th minute. With 3:09 left in the opening half, Werner took aim for MIT only to have it punched up and away by sophomore Gabi Hoops.

Hoops (16-2-2) totaled four saves as Ullmann (17-5-1) collected a season-best 10.

In all, WPI enjoyed a 22-7 margin in shots while MIT was awarded eight of the 11 corner kicks.
