Kathryn Bumila of Raynham, Mass., Named CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team Honoree

2015 May 28

WPI softball senior Kathryn Bumila has been selected as a Capital One Division III Academic All-American by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bumila was named to the first team, becoming just the 13th WPI student-athlete all-time to pick up first team accolades.

Bumila, a two-time All-NEWMAC selection and a second team All-NEWMAC pick this spring, batted .400 for the Engineers. The senior is among the conference leaders in doubles (7th - 12), runs (10th - 28), batting average (10th) and on-base percentage (11th - .446) while adding 31 RBI and walking 11 times. The first baseman has played flawless defense this spring, not committing an error in 236 chances.

A chemical engineering major with an outstanding 3.97 GPA, Bumila is a seven-time Dean's List honoree and a Charles O. Thompson scholar who has been named to the All-NEWMAC academic team the past three springs. Her IQP project restored a sugar mill in Puerto Rico. Bumila is a member of the National Honors Society, Omega Chi Epsilon and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. She was a first team Co-SIDA Academic All-District 1 pick in 2014 and 2015.

Bumila is just the third WPI softball player to earn Academic All-America status, joining Jen Richards (2009) and Kelly Johnson (2010). It marks the 55th time a WPI student-athletic has garnered Academic All-American recognition and the 35th occurrence over the last nine years.
