2015 May 13

Kathryn Bumila was one of three WPI softball student-athletes to receive National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-New England recognition, as announced recently by the organization.

Ama Biney and Nina Murphy-Cook were named to the 2015 NFCA All-New England first team while Katie Bumila was selected to the second team. All three were previously named NEWMAC All-Conference for their efforts during the regular season.

Biney, who is fourth in the nation in triples with nine, leads the NEWMAC in the category which has helped the rookie accumulate an eye-popping 106 total bases thus far. Heading into the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Super Regionals, the centerfielder appears in the NEWMAC top 10 in RBI (2nd - 44), stolen bases (3rd - 22), runs scored (3rd - 49), on-base percentage (4th - .497), slugging percentage (5th - .752), batting average (5th - .454) and home runs (6th - five).

Murphy-Cook, the NEWMAC Softball Rookie of the Year and Williamstown Regional Most Outstanding Player, paces Division III with 55 stolen bases and is just shy of the lead in stolen bases per game with 1.28. The 55 swipes are currently tied for fifth all-time in Division III. She is also seventh in runs per game (1.37) while pacing the league in hits (75), as well as while ranking second in batting average (.490) and on-base percentage (.515) to go along with 80 total bases (5th).

Bumila, a two-time All-NEWMAC selection is currently batting .413 for the Engineers. The senior is among the conference leaders in doubles (6th - 12), runs (9th - 28), batting average (10th) and on-base percentage (10th - .459) while adding 31 RBI and walking 11 times. The first baseman has played flawless defense this spring, not committing an error in 225 chances.

WPI (34-9) captured the Williamstown Regional last weekend and will now face two-time defending national champion and undefeated Tufts in a Super Regional. The action in the best-of-three series begins Thursday in Medford.
