John Bauer of Cumberland, R.I., Selected to Compete at NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships

2016 Feb 26

John Bauer is one of five WPI men's swimmers to have been selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships being held March 16-19 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Junior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Jack Bauer (Cumberland, R.I.) along with senior Nathan Hughes (Arlington, Va.), senior Alex Powers (North Scituate, R.I.) and sophomore David Smallwood (Bangor, Maine) have all been invited to the 2016 version of the event. The Bauer brothers were the two individual selections in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, respectively. It marks the first time a pair of individuals have earned an invite since Joel Rousseau and Jeffrey Meyer in 2007. The 800-yard freestyle relay team makes a return trip, albeit in a slightly different configuration, while the Engineers will also contest the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

As a result of achieving B cuts in nine other events, Andrew Bauer is eligible to also compete in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, Jack Bauer can contest the 50 free and 100-yard backstroke, Smallwood has a chance to race in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and Powers can represent the Engineers in the 100-yard backstroke. The Crimson and Gray are also allowed to enter the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

A total of 527 participants (479 swimmers and 48 divers) will compete in the championships. NCAA.com will video stream all sessions Wednesday through Saturday of the championships.
