Hope Shevchuk of Burlington, Conn., Named Academic All-American

2016 Jun 13

Hope Shevchuk was named an Academic All-America, as selected by CoSIDA.

WPI men's swimming and diving senior Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) and field hockey and softball junior Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) have been named to Academic All-America Division III At-Large teams as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hughes was selected to the second team while Shevchuk earned third team accolades.

Hughes, a three-time Academic All-District honoree, recently picked up his robotics engineering and computer science degrees. He was a member of the NEWMAC champion 200-yard freestyle relay and the silver medalist 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay in addition to a runner up finish in the 200-yard freestyle. An All-American in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Charles O. Thompson Scholar is a decorated member of the Dean's List and NEWMAC All-Academic teams. His IQP looked at the expanding the impact of EEROS (a robotics operating system) in Zurich, Switzerland. Hughes is also a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society.

Shevchuk, a dual-sport student-athlete and a chemical engineering major, started all 16 field hockey games at midfield in 2015 and has seen action in 49 of 50 possible games played the past three seasons. She notched three goals and three assists while providing the game-winner at Nichols. Shevhuk regained her starting shortstop position after joining the team upon coming back from her C-Term IQP, which helped develop an autism diagnostic app for her IQP at the New Zealand project center, and batted .306 with 22 hits, including three doubles, a triple and a home run to go with two stolen bases this spring for the repeat NCAA Division III Softball Super Regional participants. The three-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction boasts numerous Academic All-NEWMAC accolades and is a member of Active Minds, Phi Sigma Sigma and Tau Beta Pi.

The two selections bring the current total to five Academic All-Americans for the academic year, one shy of the record set in 2010-11 and 2012-13, with three track and field student-athletes still under consideration.
