2014 Dec 8

Emily Martin was one of 11 WPI student-athletes to set a school record in either swimming and diving or track and field this past weekend.

Swimming and Diving

Emily Martin, Emily Matsco, Eva Childers and Jenny Day kicked off the three-day Gompei Invitational with a time of 7:49.32 to set the new standard in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Martin went on the break the 100-yard freestyle (53.17) and 200-yard butterfly (2:12.87) records while Day broke 1990 WPI Hall of Fame inductee Anne Kruglewicz's 34-year old 500-yard freestyle record twice on Saturday. She initially clocked a 5:13.46 in the preliminaries and shaved even more time off the standard with a second-place 5:10.12 in the finals.

Nysa Casha reset the 50-yard butterfly (26.32) and the 100-yard IM (1:01.48) records while Veronica Nikolaki established a new watermark for the 3-meter (11 dive) event with 466.05 points.

On the men's side, Matt Suarez increased the 1-meter (11 dive) threshold to 391.95 as Seth MacDonald clocked a 53.13 and Alex Powers posted a 1:54.10 to set the 100-yard IM and 200-yard IM records, respectively.

Track and Field

On the track, Austin Holliday shaved .03 seconds off the 60-meter dash record with a time of 7.15. Laura Pumphrey, meanwhile, claimed the indoor high jump record outright as she cleared 5-7.75.
