Emily Doherty of Shrewsbury, Mass., Named CoSIDA Academic All-District I

2014 Nov 5

WPI junior Emily Doherty has been named to the CoSIDA Division III Women's Soccer Academic All-District I team, as selected by Division III sports information directors from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. She is now under consideration for Academic All-America status.

Doherty, an industrial engineering major, boasts a 3.64 GPA while leading the NEWMAC with 12 goals and 27 points on the season. She notched game-winning goals against Southern Maine, Framingham State and at Wellesley to help WPI log back-to-back winning seasons for the third time in school history and first time in a decade (2003, 2004).

The Dean's List honoree is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Colleges Against Cancer, as well as Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. Doherty is a Great Problems Seminars People's Choice Award winner and will head to Namibia for her IQP project in the spring.

WPI, under the guidance of second-year head coach Steph Schafer, posted an 8-7-4 overall record and a 5-2-3 ledger in conference matches. Over the course of the season, the Engineers defeated Wheaton for the first time since 1995 and enjoyed a program-best five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) en route to claiming the fifth seed in the 2014 NEWMAC Women's Soccer Championship.
