Emily Doherty of Shrewsbury, Mass., Achieves NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Honors

Emily Doherty was one of 49 fall WPI student-athletes to be recognized by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference for their work inside the classroom.

Bolstered by a league-leading 21 cross country selections, 49 WPI student-athletes achieved NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status for the fall season. Men's Cross Country boasted an Engineer-best 13 honorees followed by Women's Soccer with 10 and Field Hockey and Women's Cross Country with eight each. Men's Soccer totaled six student-athletes and Volleyball added four.

MIT paced the conference with 60 (52) followed by Springfield with 51 (44) and WPI. The number in parenthesis indicates each institution's total less women's tennis, a sport not sponsored on Boynton Hill.

Senior Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA), the lone three-time men's cross country recipient, was joined by two-time selections, seniors Sean Murphy (Atkinson, NH) and Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA), as well as juniors Kyle Morrison (York, ME), Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) and Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI). In addition to sophomores Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA), James Doty (Queensbury, NY), Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) and Justin Trott (North Hampton, NH), who made the team in their first year of eligibility, graduate Student Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) and seniors Anthony Gallo (Rocky Hill, CT) and Nathan Varney (East Longmeadow, MA) were also cited for the first time.

Senior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) paced women's cross country with her third honor as classmate, and fellow team captain, Jessica Orr (Westerly, RI) garnered her second. Junior Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) also became a repeat honoree. Junior Theresa Inzerillo (Nashua, NH) along with sophomores Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY), Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY), Emily Newman (Easton, MA) and Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) all earned their first nod.

Senior Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, NC) guided the women's soccer team with her third accolade as classmate Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) along with juniors Janine Fatal (Amesbury, MA), Lindsay Schneider (East Lyme, CT) and Victoria Simpson (Elkridge, MD) were all tabbed for the second time. First time recipients included senior Tricia Swierk (Saugus, MA), junior Jane Bingel (Wrentham, MA) and sophomores Cierra Ford (Georgia, VT), Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) and Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, MA).

Field Hockey senior Abby Cervelloni (Charlottesville, VA) was recognized for the third time as classmates SarahRose Gabor (Cazenovia, NY) and Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) picked up their second certificate. Junior Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT), a dual sport student-athlete, collected her second field hockey nod and third overall. Seniors Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) and Shannon Rice (Bath, ME) concluded their careers with a selection while sophomores Izzy Garver (Owls Head, ME) and Sabrina Guzzi (Suffield, CT) collected their first in their initial season of eligibility.

Men's Soccer senior co-captain Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) netted the hat-trick while sophomores Pav Christidis (Fairport, NY), Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY), Derrick Naugler (Westford, MA), Andy Rottier (Plainville, CT) and Ryan Stokes (Rochester, NY) secured their first conference academic accolade.

Volleyball junior Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA) was the lone repeat honoree as classmate Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) took home the award in her first year of eligibility. Sophomores Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) and Kat Hurlock (Burlington, CT) were also feted for the first time.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2015 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at his/her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
