Derrick Naugler of Westford, Mass., Named CoSIDA Men's Soccer Academic All-District I

Derrick Naugler has been named as a CoSIDA Men's Soccer Academic All-District I honoree.

WPI senior Derrick Naugler and junior Riley Doherty have been selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-District I team member in the sport of men's soccer, as voted upon by sports information directors in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The duo ties Tufts for the most nods in the district, as well as represents half of the NEWMAC honorees.

Naugler, a three-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference member, is an architectural engineering major with memberships in Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and Chi Epsilon civil engineering honor society. His IQP involved advocacy for the Wellington green gecko and New Zealand lizards in general.

Doherty, the 2015 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, and industrial engineering and economic science double major, repeated as a NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honoree. The Dean's List and Charles O. Thompson scholar is beginning work on local IQP which aims to create an automated trading system for the financial markets. He is also a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and Investing Association.

The 2017 NEWMAC All-Conference pair anchored a back line that compiled 11 shutouts, highlighted by a pair of double OT matches with Springfield. The team yielded 14 goals on the year for a GAA of 0.67 to rank third in both categories among the NEWMAC teams. Naugler also chipped in with an assist to help force overtime with then-No. 20 in the D3soccer.com Top 25 Brandeis, who also made the NCAA tournament.

It's not the first time the a Naugler and a Doherty earned All-District accolades in the same year as Kurt Naugler '16 (men's soccer) and Emily Doherty '16 (women's soccer) were selected in 2014 and 2015.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable) and he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
