Caitlin Walde of Edmonds, Wash., Earns NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Laurels

Caitlin Walde was one of 54 WPI spring student-athletes across five varsity sports to garner NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status, as recently announced.

Of the five teams announced, WPI saw three teams reach double digit recipients, with men's track and field leading the way with 20 honorees. Next was baseball and women's rowing with ten apiece, followed by women's track and field with nine and rounding out the selections was softball with five.

The men's track and field team had 20 members receive this accolade. The team was paced by seniors Joey Collins (Standish, ME) and Harry Lanphear (Manchester, ME), who were selected for the third time in their college career. Seniors Kyle Gerlach (Smithfield, RI), Austin Holliday (Danville CA), Joe Kelly (Brooklyn Park, MN), Nate Martel (Steep Falls, ME) and Tristin Richardson (Attleboro Falls, MA) were also selected to the team. The team also saw juniors Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA), Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH), Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) and Nathan Varney (East Longmeadow, MA) selected for the second time. The class of 2016 also saw selections of Anthony Gallo (Rocky Hill, CT) and Sean Murphy. Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA), Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA), Andrew Dunne (Westford, MA), Kyle Morrison (York, ME), Austin Scott (Waddington, NY), Nathan Stomberg (W. Greenwich, RI) and Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) all saw their names appear for the first time.

WPI's women's track and field team saw nine members selected to the team, with six being returners from last year's team. This year the Engineers were paced by seniors Andrea Caprio (Tewksbury, MA), who was honored for the third time, while Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) and Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) received the accolade for the second time and classmate Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA) for the first time. Jessica Orr (Westerly RI), Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA), and Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) picked up the honor for the second time, while seeing teammates Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) and Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) notch the award for the first time in 2015.

Baseball saw ten members of its squad selected to NEWMAC All-Conference Academic team. WPI saw senior Matthew Cote (Burrillville, RI) receive the award for his third time in four years. The team also saw five second time winners in Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA), Allen Burgess (Plymouth, MA), Steve Petry (Worcester, MA), Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA) and DJ Ouellette (Watertown, CT). Rounding out the teams selection were four first-time winners in Vinny D'Ambrisio (Mahopac, NY), John Mulready (Rockland, MA), Dan Bettigole (South Windsor, CT) and Mike Vaitkunas (Auburn, MA).

Ten members of WPI's women's rowing team received All-Conference Academic team accolades. They were led by seniors Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), SaraBeth Leach (Fairfax Station, VA) and Corre Steele (Stow, MA) all three were receiving this honor for the third time in four years, and Anisa Swei (Brookline, MA) who was named for the second time. Rounding out the selections were six first time honorees, Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA), Victoria Loehle ( Morganville, NJ) and Emily Richardson (Portland, OR).

Softball saw four sophomores and a senior get the nod to the All-Conference Academic team. The team was led by senior and three-time award winner Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA). Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA), Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ), Juila Ring (Leominster, MA) and Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) all saw honors for the first time.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2014 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
