Brendan Marion of Norristown, Pa., Honored as WPI Sweeps NEWA Weekly Awards

WPI's Brendan Marion garnered a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) weekly award announced by the conference on Thursday morning.

Senior 133-pounder Stephen Jendritz was tabbed the NEWA Wrestler of the Week while freshman 165-pounder Brendan Marion was named the organization's Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 21st.

Jendritz went 4-0 and had three big wins over regionally-ranked opponents. He pinned Shale Ring of Norwich just 20 seconds in his first match. Against Castleton he beat sixth-ranked Nicholas Camacho 3-2. In the semifinals Jendritz knocked off a regional place winner from last year in No. 4 Jason Jacobi of RWU 3-1 in SV-1. In the third place match he defeated second-ranked Owen McClave of Coast Guard 3-1 in SV-1.

The senior now boasts a 20-6 overall record with three pins. He moved up one spot to number two in the NEWA individual rankings released Thursday.

Marion went 4-0 and lead the Engineers to a third place finish, their best ever at the NEWA Duals. Marion beat Brandon DesFosses of Norwich 10-4 in his first match. In his second match he defeated Jared Costa, the fourth ranked wrestler in New England, of Castleton 10-4. In the semi-finals against No. 9 nationally-ranked Taylor Shay of Roger Williams, Marion won 6-3. In the third place team match, where WPI beat Coast Guard 22-15, he beat No. 7 nationally-ranked Nick Remke of Coast Guard 8-6 in TB1.

It marks the second time the freshman has received the honor from the conference as he was also selected in early December after winning the title at the RIT Invitational. Marion made his season debut in the most recent NEWA individual rankings, catapulting himself all the way to the top spot in the region. The rookie is 21-4 on the season with eight falls.

WPI is at home Saturday for a quad with Southern Maine, Johnson & Wales and Brockport. Action begins in the Sports & Recreation Center at 11am.
